2026 Genesis G80 Performance First Drive: Rarer Than an M5

The exclusive Genesis G80 Performance is the orangest car we’ve ever experienced.

Do all niches need to be filled? That’s the question we chew on as our 510-hp Genesis G80 rockets down a winding road near a posh desert resort. It’s a lot to process, and we haven’t even mentioned the bright orange paint, the strict 20-unit Middle East production run, or the best part of this luxury sedan’s transformation.

Driving this extra-strength G80 excites us for the future of the Genesis brand, but perhaps not in the way you’d think. Before we hop in the driver’s seat, we need to explain the story behind this unusual and extraordinarily rare Genesis.

The Sporty Luxury Sedan We Never Expected

The Genesis G80 Performance is a Middle East–only special built in partnership with the same team that brought us multimillion-dollar supercars like the 900-hp Fenyr SuperSport and the Lykan HyperSport, which had a claimed top speed of 242 mph.

The G80 Performance has little in common with those hypercars, and it’s better for it.

That 510-hp engine? It’s a modified version of Genesis’ own 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6, and there’s much more to this car than an engine and orange accents to recall the new performance subbrand, Magma.

The 21-inch forged BBS wheels look great and are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires, a KW coil-over suspension, Brembo GT brakes, plenty of carbon-fiber trim, and—of course—a body kit.

This is the sportiest Genesis G80 ever made, yet it still isn’t as hardcore as full-out four-door sport sedans such as the BMW M5 and new Audi RS5.

The Best Part

Even before you take off, the upgraded exhaust system makes itself known with a throaty burble at idle and healthy growl when revved. We’re living in an age of Porsche 911s that hit the quarter mile in less than 10 seconds and 717-hp plug-in hybrid M5s; the G80 Performance simply can’t compete on straight-line thrills alone.

As sporty as the G80 Performance is, the car feels substantial. By design, there’s a heaviness here that’s similar to the standard G80 3.5T Sport Prestige, a car we described as more pampering than athletic.

And there’s nothing wrong with that. The G80 Performance represents a purposeful compromise for those who want a mean-sounding cruiser with the ability to take a corner more confidently than the average midsize luxury sedan.

Not the Performance Model We’d Want

During our quick drive, we loved the G80 Performance’s greater responsiveness, from the steering to the transmission to the brakes. Knowing how good the G70 and GV70 are to drive, however, we’d rather see a Magma-fied or “Performance” version of those former MotorTrend award winners in the U.S.

So no, we don’t want this 20-unit Middle East special in the U.S., as its connection to the standard G80’s purer luxury experience is too thin. Instead, it whets our appetite to see what Genesis performance will mean for other models.

With the G70 sedan’s long-term future unclear, our focus shifts to the GV70 SUV. The G80 Performance’s real win is in reminding us how cool Magma vehicles may be.

I’ve come a long way since I drove sugar packets across restaurant tables as a kid, pretending they were cars. With more than 17 years of experience, I'm passionate about demystifying the new car market for shoppers and enthusiasts. My expertise comes from thoughtfully reviewing countless vehicles across the automotive spectrum. The greatest thrill I get isn’t just from behind the wheel of an exotic car but from a well-executed car that’s affordable, entertaining, and well-made. Since about the time I learned to walk I’ve been fascinated by cars of all shapes and sizes, but it wasn’t until I struggled through a summer high school class at the Pasadena Art Center College of Design that I realized writing was my ticket into the automotive industry. My drive to high school was magical, taking me through a beautiful and winding canyon; I've never lost the excited feeling some 16-year-olds get when they first set out on the road. The automotive industry, singing, and writing have always been my passions, but because no one seeks a writer who sings about the automotive industry, I honed my writing and editing skills at UC Irvine (zot zot!), serving as an editor of the official campus newspaper and writing stories as a literary journalism major. At USC, I developed a much greater appreciation for broadcast journalists and became acquainted with copy editing rules such as why the Oxford comma is so important. Though my beloved 1996 Audi A4 didn’t survive my college years, my career with MotorTrend did. I started at the company in 2007 building articles for motorcycle magazines, soon transitioning to writing news posts for MotorTrend’s budding online department. I spent some valuable time in the copy editing department, as an online news director, and as a senior production editor. Today, MotorTrend keeps me busy as the Buyer's Guide Director. Not everyone has a career centered on one of their passions, and I remind myself all the time how lucky I am.
